We’ve all seen it happen in the movies. An accident in some military experiment causes the release of a toxin that causes people to become zombies. And from there, a fight for survival begins.

The groceries in your local shops won’t last for more than a week and they will probably be pillaged in the first couple of days. It is most unlikely you will find a way to grow food before you can build a safe base. Stock up on canned food now, and other non-perishable goods!
Power
Expect major services to be shut down, and this will include power generation, like electricity. The same will happen with gas and heating. Plan ahead, make sure you have the essentials to cover you both in winter and summer situations. It’s probably not a bad idea to start building some fuel reserves, too.
Loneliness
Don’t play the lone wolf. You will be on constant survival mode and you will need to be on permanent vigilance. Find someone whom you can trust and make shifts to cover each other back and allow both of you to get some rest now and then.
Two heads think always better than one. Find at least one partner, if you can’t find a team.
People
I know, it sounds like a contradiction after the last one. But when people go into survival mode they are often not rational. Be very wary of those you don’t know. Always keep your guard up. There will be people out there who will sacrifice YOU if they can guarantee their survival in return.
