Each year the Canadian government issues thousands of working holiday visas to young travellers from around the world. These “working holiday visas” enable users to work in Canada for up to two years. Many working holiday visa holders start their job and apartment search at Global Village Backpackers which is conveniently located in the heart of Canada’s largest city where apartments and jobs are easier to find.
Depending on your home country, there are usually two options to obtain your visa (a) direct through the Canadian Embassy or Consultant in your home country or (b) through a third party supplier such as STA, USIT, BUNAC and other similar organizations. The economy in Canada is very strong so there are jobs available here—but this of course depends on the season and the type of work you are seeking. Working holiday visa holders can usually find hospitality work during the warmer months (April to October) and there are still plenty of jobs available during the winter months. The minimum wage in Ontario is now $10.25 per hour. Accommodation is also fairly easy to secure—especially if you team up with other travellers in a youth hostel. Beware however of pre-booking cheaper apartments online before you arrive in Toronto! Many travellers have been disappointed by the cleanliness or location of apartments that seem to be good deals. Working downtown Toronto (where all the nightlife and tourist activities are located) can be a hard commute if you end up with an apartment located one hour away in the suburbs!
